the great compromise and frogs

a while back, back where the white sand and salty waters meet, husband and wife compromised.
husband begged wife to move to a land north. not the north that wife knew and loved but the north unfamiliar and unloved. his spreadsheets enticed. his google maps were filled with houses galore. but wife was never quite convinced. eventually she told husband if he were to build her a pool in her backyard, a pool where she could close her eyes and pretend the sand was between her toes and the waves were tickling her feet, she would move to his north.
and guess what? that husband agreed.

jump forward two years and we are almost finished with that backyard pool. chris has been a man of his word. i adore him for that. not because he built me a pool, but because he IS a man of his word in all things.
we still have the cement to pour and the fence to erect, but the pool is in ground and the water is safe and the frogs love it.

yep. it's become a frog haven. i was told the frogs lay eggs in the pool every night. and they are very, very loud. very loud. they have been seen at dusk waiting by the poolside to jump in and enjoy the clean, clear water as they mate. it's mating season big time.

one evening ceily, eddie and lana were given permission to swim. it was about 10pm. they were filled with excitement when they saw frogs aplenty and also two of those plenty mating. one on top of each other doing what they do. apparently this was explained to noah. he missed out because he was sleeping.

the next night, chris and i were preparing for bed. everyone was in pj's with teeth brushed. noah was in my room, following me asking me questions about my sleep habits.

noah: "mom, what time do you go to bed?"
me: "i don't know. it depends. usually late."
noah: "like how late?"
me: "sometimes 10, sometimes 11, sometimes even later."
noah: "yeah, well, how 'bout tonight? what time will you and dad go to sleep tonight?"

this is when i begin to detect an ulterior motive. two and two are adding up and i'm beginning to understand.

me: "i sure hope you aren't planning to go get in the pool after we go to sleep. that is not allowed. and some nights i don't even sleep. i stay awake allllll night long."
noah: "but i really, really want to go out to the pool tonight!"
me: "if you do that you will never be allowed in the pool any night or any day."
noah: "but i want to see the frogs do sex! lana and ceily and eddie saw two frogs doing sex and i want to see them too!"

noah still has not been able to see the frogs do sex. maybe one day his dream will come true.
maybe...
