Eddie has been playing soccer for a few years now. This year was the break-away year. Before, soccer usually consisted of 10 boys, massed together, trying to kick one ball. It was usually just a big cloud of chaos. No one really knew exactly what they were doing. All they really knew and wanted, was to get the ball past the goalie. Now, the U9 division is a different scene all together. Every player has a position and actually knows what their role is on the team. Every player usually stays in the assigned position.

I was asking Eddie this week what the hardest thing about soccer was. He really didn't come up with an answer. Then I asked him what the hardest position was. He told me one, and I can't remember what it's called, but that player's responsibility is to keep the ball away from the goal. Well, Eddie has a tournament this week. The first few games were pretty dismal. The team just wasn't in it. I don't think U9 Fire has won one game this season. Boys are getting discouraged, and I think, this weekend, the coach was finally a bit worried. He just didn't see the boys putting their hearts into the game. This coach is awesome. He's so encouraging and really teaches these boys the game. He's gentle and strong and we really love him. But, he was a bit upset and let the boys know in his quiet, strong way. Eddie even said he needed to do better. Well, the very last game was played and it was one of the best games this team has ever played. They played a team from NC and they were pretty good.

No goal was scored, on either side. As Eddie and I were walking to the car, the coach saw us. He stopped his car, got out of his car, walked up to us and said; "Eddie, tell your dad that this is the best game you have ever played. Keep up the great work." Well, since then, Eddie has been a new person. He's confident and feels good about himself. Yesterday he was dressed in his uniform, ready to play soccer with the neighbor boys. It made me think how much just a few kind, encouraging words can change a person; can make their day; can bring a tear to a mom's eye. I think Eddie will play a bit stronger this week. Thanks to a coach's few words.
